Description

NGC 891 is  an edge-on spiral galaxy approximately 30M Ly's away in the constellation Andromeda.  It is considered similar in size and luminosity to the Milky Way and is thought to be similar to how the Milky Way would look when viewed edge-on.  The filamentary detail emerging from the galactic disk is presumed to be dust thrown into the galactic halo from either supernova explosions or light pressure from the surrounding stars.
